Susi Kaeufer is a digital nomad and business and mindset coach. For most of her life, she knew that she wanted to travel the world. However, she was told that traveling all the time was unrealistic and was encouraged to follow the typical path: go to school, get a job, and start climbing the corporate ladder. Traveling could always come later.

On her 30th birthday, she began to re-think her entire life and what she wanted to do with it. She knew that following the conventional job route was not her true calling. Finally, in 2014, she left her stable job and life in Germany to go backpacking. Many people in her life thought that she would come back to Germany after a short time, desperate for a job.

When she left home, she traveled for two years without a plan for a business. When she got to Australia, she landed a job that was typical for international backpackers in customer service. She knew that this job wasn’t the path that she wanted for herself so she looked to find a way to turn her skills and passions into location independent business so she could continue traveling.

After spending some time in Australia and in her job at a customer service center, she quickly became a team leader and began coaching new employees. These employees would come to the job overwhelmed and she quickly realized her skills as a mentor. She found that she was good at simplifying things for people, making people believe in themselves, and empowering people to make the best out of their situation. She had a special way of helping people shift their mindset.

Susi knew that she loved coaching but didn’t love talking about customer service as it wasn’t her passion. She knew that she had to make a change and looked into a coaching certification course. She realized she could build a location independent business by working online and coaching people.

When she first decided to become a location independent entrepreneur, her biggest struggle was showing up as an expert on social media, putting herself out there, and selling. She didn’t quite fully understand how to use social media for her business. At first, she was very careful on social media at the beginning and avoided being bold by not expressing what she truly believed because she was worried people would say something negative. She wanted to avoid her fears of discomfort and judgment from others.

Now, she firmly believes that finding confidence in yourself is a mindset thing. She needed to hire mindset coaches to change her thinking of needing to play it safe. She believes that everyone has something important to say and they should develop a mindset of an entrepreneur. She acknowledges that this is an ongoing process. It’s important to continue doing the uncomfortable things that need to be done and to take the action.

When asked about her balance between work and travel she said, “I travel more than I work.” She said that it was a blessing to start her business at the time of life she did because she has always only had a few hours a day to work on it. From the beginning, she was forced to be efficient and to focus on the tasks that mattered. She believes that having limited time each day forces you to get over perfectionism.

She said that if she works efficiently, she works a maximum of five hours a day. However,  most days she works an average of 2 to 3 hours. She acknowledges that she could scale her business if she worked more but is happy where things are. She said that there are no rules about how many hours you need to work in your business and that’s the beauty of being your own boss and an entrepreneur.

Susi believes that working hard to be efficient is the most important thing for her to build a successful business. She said you have to quickly figure out what the most important tasks are and work on those. She spends time on the tasks that no one else can do like coaching her clients and going live on Instagram. She believes that everything else can be done by someone else. She said that the ideal vision is that you hire help before you are burned out and overworked. When you outsource, you can focus your energy on money making activities.

A message she wanted to leave the listeners with is that you are never too old or too young to start a business. She started her business at the age of 33. She said that no matter what stage of life you are in, you still get to choose how you want to design your life.

Favorite book or podcast:

Her favorite book is “Eat, Pray, Love” by Elizabeth Gilbert. This was the first book that showed her that there are people travelling and doing something different with their lives. It highly influenced her to see that there was more to life than just a conventional way of living.

-Her favorite podcast is “Manifestation Babe” by Kathrin Zenkina. She loves it because it teaches you that you can manifest anything and gives actionable steps to get you out of the box of limited thinking and to create your best reality.

Quote you are living by or feel inspired by:

“We rise by lifting others.” She believes that she is successful in business because she focuses on making other people successful. She thinks that everyone should come from a place of service.

Magic wand with a gift to people:

She would love for every person to have a Master NLP certification. This would help people not to take everything so personally. It would help you recognize that others’ actions are not a reflection of you, but instead, a reflection of how they feel about themselves.
